Canal de Castilla. Hacía tiempo que tenía ganas de acercarme con los peques a Medina de Rioseco y montar en el barco para surcar el canal. Y es que dar un paseo en barco por el canal de Castilla es un chiquiplan muy, pero que muy molón, ya que además de conocer un medio de transporte diferente pueden aprender algo de historia. Aunque es cierto que mis peques son muy peques y no se quedaron con nada de la historia, pero si tienes hijos de 7-8 años en adelante seguramente disfruten y aprendan.
En Medina de Rioseco, más conocida como la Ciudad de los Almirantes y a 40 kilómetros de Valladolid, se encuentra el Centro Recepción de Pasajeros del canal de Castilla. Y allí nos espera la embarcación turística ‘Antonio de Ulloa‘, un barco eléctrico que lleva el nombre de uno de los ingenieros del canal de Castilla, con el que se pretendía comunicar la provincia de Valladolid con Cantabria. En este punto comienza nuestro viaje por lo que se conoce como el ‘mar de Castilla’.
¿Qué voy a encontrar en el post?
Viaje por el canal de Castilla
El barco parte de Medina de Rioseco y puedes optar por dos de viajes. Uno corto (1 hora de duración), que es el que hicimos nosotros y creo que es el más acertado para los más pequeños, y uno más largo (2 horas y media aproximadamente).
Como decía, nosotros hicimos el corto y creo que es el más recomendable si vas con niños, como fue nuestro caso, porque se les hace más llevadero. El largo puede ser muy pesado para ellos, pero pienso que es el más indicado para los adultos ya que lo puedes completar con una degustación.
Nosotros dimos un paseo de 7 kilómetros en barco por el Canal de Castilla (3,5 de ida y 3,5 de vuelta) y durante el viaje vimos piragüistas, patos e incluso una mariposilla que se coló en la embarcación para disfrutar de la experiencia. Durante la ida, el pequeñoM fue a lo suyo y la ratona pintando, pero a la vuelta los dos fueron mirando por la ventana y contemplando el paisaje, como el campo de cereal o de girasoles.
Y seguro que te preguntas qué velocidad puede alcanzar esta embarción. Pues bien, el barco puede alcanzar los 14 kilómetros / hora, pero en la zonas de poco calado, como es esta, transita a 7 kilómetros/hora.
En la provincia de Valladolid, la navegabilidad es posible en el Ramal de Campos, situado entre la sexta esclusa, próxima a Tamariz de Campos, Villanueva de San Mancio y la dársena de Medina de Rioseco. Y para quien no lo sepa -yo lo aprendí en el viaje- una esclusa es un recinto con compuertas que se construye para que los barcos puedan pasar de un tramo a otro de distinto nivel mediante el llenado y vaciado del espacio comprendido entre dichas compuertas. Si te animas a realizar el viaje de 2 horas y media tendrás la oportunidad de ver como el barco entra en la séptima esclusa.

Si te animas a disfrutar de este paseo en barco por el canal de Castilla, te recomiendo que llames antes al 983 701 923 para reservar plaza y no te ocurra como a nosotros que fuimos sin reserva, nos encontramos que el barco estaba lleno y tuvimos que esperar al viaje de la tarde.

Por último, indicar que el canal fue declarado Bien de Interés Cultural en 1991, lo que vino a demostrar la importancia de esta grandiosa obra de ingeniería que, en la actualidad, se ha convertido en el único canal navegable de toda España, que comprende las provincias de Palencia, Burgos y Valladolid.
Más actividades
Pero en Medina de Rioseco podemos hacer más cosas. En esta zona del canal podemos practicar piragüismo, de hecho el día que estuvimos nosotros vimos a varias personas remando por el canal. Así que si buscas actividades de agua aquí puedes practicarlas. Además, puedes alquilar karts de pedales y disfrutar del canal por el camino de sirga.
Además puedes visitar la fábrica de harinas de san Antonio que fue construida en el siglo XIX, que se encuentra en la margen izquierda de la dársena. Esta fábrica conserva de manera íntegra toda su maquinaria original. Nosotros no la visitamos porque el recorrido podía resultar tedioso para los niños.
